This watercolour workshop will focus on the effects of direct sunlight and filtered shadows within a lakeside landscape. We'll work together on a painting through instructor demos and individual coaching. We'll explore colour temperature and tonal values to achieve a personal impression of light and shadows. Remember that watercolour is a very expressive medium which allows for variation and unique surprises in the final result. This workshop will be best suited to experienced beginners and intermediate painters familiar with watercolour and with a desire to 'loosen up!' - See more

Watercolour Evenings

6 sessions Mondays, January 19 – February 23, 2015 7-9pm
West Van Community Centre Art Studio, 2121 Marine Drive
Cost: $95

Description:

Watercolour is one of the oldest and most expressive mediums. Today it can be used in a variety of different ways, as a means of sketching, developing ideas, it can be combined with other water based mediums such as acrylic and gouache and it stands alone as a genre in its own right.

Through a combination of studio practice and homework you will learn about materials, composition, pictorial design, colour mixing, laying and grading washes, working wet in wet and completing a painting.

This course will give you the tools and confidence to practice on your own and encourage you to develop your own personal way of visual expression. No previous experience is needed. A basic starter pack will be provided for the first 2 classes and supplementary items will be needed as we progress through the course. I will assess the needs of each student and offer suggestions on how to build your art toolkit without breaking the bank!

FLUID ACRYLICS

Painting workshop: Urban Cherry Blossoms

2 sessions June 28+29
The Music Box, 1564 Argyle Ave
Cost: $185

DESCRIPTION:

Recreate a vibrant urban cherry blossom landscape in a watercolour style using fluid acrylics on canvas. We will explore new techniques including wet in wet washes, glazing, pouring, and combining transparent with opaque paint. Come with a specially prepared canvas and some specific cherry blossom colours. Supply list and instructions are provided with registration. Intermediate painters with some watercolour and/or acrylic experience are welcome.

Every year through March and April, Vancouver hosts Canada's only Cherry Blossom Festival. Over 40,000 cherry trees and 50 cultivars burst into bloom creating a stunning display of colour throughout the City. This workshop pays homage to the tremendous spring time experience of walking around the neighbourhoods we live and work in, seeing this remarkable urban landscape.
